Domaine Ponsot![]()
WILLIAM PONSOT was born in St Romain in the south of the Côte d'Or. At the end of the 1870 war against the Prussians (Reischoffen ...) he bought in Morey-St-Denis some vineyards (Monts-Luisants, Clos de la Roche, ...) and a house.
As he had no children, he gave in 1920 this small Estate to his cousin, HIPPOLYTE PONSOT which was a lawyer, captain in the first world war and diplomat after that.
Hippolyte bought more vines in Clos de la Roche, and begin the estate bottling with the 1932 vintage.
He was also one of the founder of the A.O.C. classification of the vineyards in Burgundy in 1935/36.
In 1947, his son JEAN-MARIE PONSOT start to collaborate on the culture and vinification with his father which retired in 1957.
Jean-Marie PONSOT is a pioneer of the clonal selection of the Pinot Noir in Burgundy at the beginning of the sixties. A lot of the most reputed plants of Pinot Noir (113,114,115,667...) have been selected in our vines of Clos de la Roche, and the mother plants are still living now.
In 1972, the surface of the estate has been added of several vines in Gevrey Chambertin by the heritage of Madame Jacqueline PONSOT (Jean-Marie's wife) from her father.
In 1975 the estate has been turned into a company, and the co-owners were Jean-Marie and Jacqueline Ponsot, Father Denis Ponsot and Marie-Antoinette Ponsot (brother and sister of Jean-Marie)
LAURENT PONSOT studied in Nice and was manager of a Travel Agency in Paris. In 1981 he returned to the familial Estate where he founded a new commercial structure. He also went at this time to the University of Dijon and got in 1983 his diploma of Oenologist. From 1983 he is in charge of the vinification.
He runs now the estate, following his philosophy of giving the most important part of the work to Mother Nature.
Nowadays, the estate is still totally in the hands of the Ponsot Family and the actual owners are Laurent Ponsot and his sisters, Rose-Marie Ponsot, Catherine Ponsot-Jacquin and Stéphanie Ponsot.
