As an accomplished rugby player, Emmanuel Humbert is an unlikely Burgundy star. Soft-spoken and shy, and decidedly uncomfortable in the limelight, he will need to adapt, because his wines are earning greater public acclaim, and eventually he’ll be placed center stage. Emmanuel and brother Frédéric Humbert are the fourth generation of vignerons to tend this family estate. They took over the domaine from their parents in 1989, and they’ve been quietly and steadily improving the quality of their wine. Their wines reflect their dedicated effort and experience gained over the past 12 vintages. "Manu" is the dynamic force behind this domaine: he is a thoughtful and passionate man with a great love for wine, food and rugby, and he’s been the winemaker for 21 of his 41 years, while Frédéric is more shy and reserved. The Humbert Brothers are well connected in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, where they have a wealth of winemaking experience from relations and family friends. They taste regularly with cousin Bernard Dugat-Py, Pierre Damoy and Philippe Charlopin, all extremely gifted winemakers. These wines are delightfully confounding, confident and complete, yet discreetly elegant, filled with the complexity and grace that marks the finest red Burgundy wines.
The domaine style is ideally suited to this fruit, translating this mineral essence into wine of precision and intellectual subtlety, with brambly flavors of Bing cherries, wet stones and subtle woods (sandalwood? balsam?).
