Catena Zapata
Nicolás and his team have started planting vineyards in Gualtallary, Tupungato, a region located at an elevation of 4,800 feet. Nicolás believes that by reaching the climatic limit of vine cultivation, this low yielding vineyard will eventually produce his finest wine yet. The first harvest was realized in 1999 and the fruit quality was remarkable, reaching new heights of excellence. Time will tell. In addition, Nicolás Catena is proud to announce the opening in April 2001 of his new state of the art winery in the high altitude winegrowing district of Agrelo in Mendoza, Argentina. Located at 950 meters above sea level, at the foot of the majestic Andes, this unique facility is equipped with customized, one of a kind winemaking technology. It is the latest reflection of Nicolás Catena's ongoing quest to place Argentine wines among the best of the world. The winery was designed to provide the most gentle handling of the grapes in order to reserve the full spectrum of their natural flavors and aromas. Custom designed wide mouth tanks, mobile crushers and selection tables, as well as a robotic punching down and remontage machine, allow for the maximum expression of varietal character. When he was defining the architectural style of the new winery, Nicolás Catena wondered how he would manage to embody the uniqueness of Mendoza's wine country, nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. A Mayan-inspired pyramid was his final choice. He felt that this civilization's stature as a grandiose example of Pre-Columbian American architecture could best reflect the unique terroir of the high altitude wine country of Mendoza, Argentina. The wine shows an intense greenish yellow color. The aromas show ripe pineapple and banana fruit flavors with notes of white stone fruits and hints of sweet spices. The mouthfeel is full yet clean, with fresh, crisp acidity. more
