Spring Valley Vineyard

This Merlot blend gets its name from the grandfather of Shari Corkrum Derby. Born in Walla Walla on June 1, 1866 he began successful farming on his own during the 1880's. Poor weather prevented him from harvesting his crop and he lost everything during the first great depression of 1893. He struggled to persevere and in 1910 acquired land in the area known as Spring Valley.

Wine Spectator

Supple and generous, beautifully structured to show off currant, plum and blackberry flavors, gently supported with ultrarefined tannins. Delicious now, but this has miles to go. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2013.

Score: 94. —Harvey Steiman, March 22, 2006.

Wine Advocate

The 2003 Uriah, a blend of 77% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, offers a nose of waxy black fruits and cream. A full-bodied, dense, thick behemoth, this powerful, chunky effort is crammed with blackberries, brambleberries, and cassis as well as copious quantities of exquisitely ripened tannin. Projected maturity: 2008-2016.

Score: 91. —Pierre Rovani, April 2006.

Wine Enthusiast

Roughly three quarters Merlot, the rest Cab Franc with a drop of Petit Verdot, this is the mirror image of the Frederick. More fruit-forward, ripe and accessible, the spicy red fruits are set into thick, chocolaty tannins. It holds its balance despite the 15% alcohol, but it may be somewhat precarious. I would drink it early for maximum pleasure.

Score: 91. —Paul Gregutt, June 01, 2006.
