Shafer
In this fifth vintage, the Syrah is really developing, bringing classic earthy, meaty varietal character along with aromas and flavors of blackberry, spice, chocolate, liqueur, black licorice and cedar. This release is viscous, well-integrated, dense and massive. The fruit-weight carries the big tannins and offers a long finish.
Wine Spectator
A hearty, robust style, with firm, rich mineral, wild berry and blueberry fruit that's accented by spice, mineral and hints of mocha and earth. Finishes with dense, chewy tannins. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Best from 2008 through 2013. 2,500 cases made.
Score: 94. —James Laube, March 31, 2007.Wine Advocate
The brainchild of winemaker/viticulturist Elias Fernandez, the Relentless (a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Petite Sirah aged 32 months in 100% new French oak) has been a fabulous success since its debut vintage. The 2003 Relentless reveals a dense purple color in addition to a full-bodied, concentrated style, but not the sweetness or glycerin of the 2002. More structured, with slightly more aggressive tannin, it should be cellared for another 1-3 years, and drunk over the following 10-15.
