Lail

Each year we strive to produce wines of escalating brilliance and delight. The attention to minute details begins in the vineyards and carries to nuances and subtleties in the winemaking phase. We believe the 2001 J. Daniel Cuvee evidences the continuing journey to the pinnacle of excellence.

Wine Advocate

The finest effort yet produced, the 2001 J. Daniel Cuvee is a 1,000 case, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offering. Complex notes of lead pencil shavings, black currants, licorice, and vanilla cascade from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Structured, medium-bodied, moderately tannic, and oh, so pure and layered, this beauty will be at its finest between 2006-2015.

Score: 93. —Robert Parker, December 2003.

Wine Spectator

Dark, intense and deeply concentrated, framed by solid, mouthcoating tannins, the core blueberry, plum and black cherry flavors are intense and focused, shining through the oak and tannins on the finish, where a nice touch of mocha adds dimension. Should reward short-term cellaring. Best from 2006 through 2012. 1,050 cases made.

Score: 92. —James Laube, November 15, 2004.

Wine Enthusiast

Made from Howell Mountain grapes, yet rich and approachable in youth. There are huge, chewy tannins, but they’re sweet, and frame black currant and cherry-chocolate fudge flavors. This makes it sound like a dessert wine, but it’s dry and balanced and entirely satisfying.

Score: 92. —Steve Heimoff, October 01, 2004.
