“M“ stands for “monumental“ and serves to signify a Grüner Veltliner of exceptional complexity and dimension of taste. The first Gruner to be awarded this honor was one of the 1991 vintage. To us that wine appeared to be a monument, indeed. The grapes for “M“ are usually harvested two to three weeks after the fruit for the vineyard-designated wines. Depending on the vintage and growing season, “M“ is usually made by 70 percent of grapes derived from Loibner Berg, the balance being a selection from premium sites. “M“ is always a mighty wine, exhibiting a delicate, dainty opulence.

Wine Spectator

Ripe, broad and rich, this is full of peach, red berry and lanolin flavors and wrapped in plenty of smoke, with a very long, spice-filled finish. Drink now through 2010.

Score: 91. —Kim Marcus, April 30, 2007.

Wine Advocate

The 2005 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd M – by now typically – comes from around two-thirds Loibnerberg with the rest Kellerberg and Liebenberg. Dried plum and cooked berry aromas set the style for a rich, voluminous mouthful of jammy and dried fruit concentrate, impressively dense and undeniably long, but lacking the verve and sap of the winery’s best Gruner Veltliner and faintly betraying its alcohol. I doubt that will change once the wine – tasted from cask – goes into bottle.

Score: 89-90. —David Schildknecht, August 2006.
