FX Pichler

There is an international consensus that this is the absolute model vineyard. This vertiginous, barren and purist primitive-rock terrace, which is south-easterly exposed and located at the exit of a side valley, creates a very special microclimate. The Kellerberg vineyard is already pampered by the sun early in the morning. During night, cool air streaming in from the bordering woods fosters the development of the complex texture and delicately nuanced, usually exotic aromas and flavors inherent in/typical of this wine. In fall, large temperature differences between day and night shape the grapes. Honey melon, mango, maracuja, banana and fully ripe peach, concise minerally notes as a dowry of the meager, weathered soil, and the extremely deeply rooting old vines make the wines of this site unparalleled and outstanding. We are fascinated about the wines from the Kellerberg due to their filigree elegance, which can hardly be expressed in words, This is our most noble wine, a true aristocrat.

International Wine Cellar

Medium green-yellow. Still somewhat closed on the nose but opens with coaxing to reveal elegant spicy tobacco and ripe juicy apple and apricot. The juicy apricot element carries through on the palate, where it's joined by strong minerality. Very elegantly styled wine, offering a delicate play of acidity and a discreet note of honey interwoven with a wet stone character. An aristocratic wine with great aging potential. Drink 2010 to 2022.

Score: 95. —Josh Raynolds, November 2008.

Wine Advocate

The F. X. 2007 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Kellerberg smells of over-ripe pear, musk melon, lilac, mango, and grapefruit, along with pungent black pepper; coats the palate with rich fruit backed by a sense of sweetness from glycerin and sheer extract; and clings with pungent resin, rich coffee, musk, and tropical fruit, tinged with site typical black pepper. Seamlessly rich and polished, this should hold well for at least a decade.

Score: 93. —David Schildknecht, February 2009.

Wine Spectator

Offers a lush core of stone fruit flavors accented by plenty of white pepper notes. The elegant finish features hints of butterscotch. Drink now through 2014.

Score: 91. —Kim Marcus, December 15, 2008.
