Altesino

Ruby red in color tending toward garnet with age with an ample bouquet of violet and vanilla. Dry and velvety on the palate. Rich with an optimal balance of fruit, acidity, and tannin. Recommended with roasted red meats and game. Excellent with aged cheeses.

Wine Enthusiast

Splendid from the gun, and classy. Early aromas of hard spices, mineral and matchstick announce some young oak, but that shortly dissipates, revealing a tight cherry and dark-chocolate bouquet. This model Brunello is impeccably balanced through the palate and onto the finish, which features a huge mix of pepper, licorice, baked fruit and vanilla. Hold at least until 2006.

Score: 93. —Michael Schachner, June 01, 2004.

International Wine Cellar

($68) Bright, dark red. Complex nose melds cherry, sweet spices, herbs and woodsy, truffley underbrush. Juicy, brisk and penetrating on the palate, with highly aromatic but rather cool red berry and floral flavors. Very youthful wine, finishing with lovely length and lift, and late notes of currant, cherry and leather. The tannins dust the front teeth. Needs six or seven years of additional bottle aging. 91(+?) points

Score: 91. —Stephen Tanzer,

Wine Spectator

Outstandingly fresh aromas of roses, berries and spicy oak with hints of incense. Full-bodied, with silky and caressing tannins and a long, finely textured finish. A very pretty wine already. Hard to resist. Best after 2005. 6,000 cases made.

Score: 91. —James Suckling, June 15, 2004.
