Allegrini

A full bodied, intense and elegant red wine. Harvest: Manuel harvest carried out at the end of October. Late harvest to guarentee full ripening of the grapes on the wine. Vinification: De-stalking and crushing of the grapes, fermentation temperature: 25-30° C, maceration time: 10 days, daily periodic pumping over, malolactic fermentation during the month of January, transferred into wood in November, matured in wood for 18 months, matured in bottle for 18 months. Analytical data: Total acidity: 5,70 g/l, pH 3,49, total dry extract: 27,7 g/l, degree of alcohol: 13,90%, residual sugars: 3,8 g/l, total SO2: 65 mg/l, free SO2: 24 mg/l. Gastronomy: It is an ideal accompaniment to roast meats and game. It is excellent with mellow, aged cheeses, and is the perfect match with dishes made with white or black truffles from Valpolicella. Serve at 16° C and open the bottle an hour before drinking.

Wine Spectator

Always very serious. Lots of raisin, tobacco and toasted oak on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This is loaded with fruit. Still very young. Give it time. Corvina. Best after 2006. 2,500 cases made.

Score: 93. —James Suckling, July 31, 2003.

Wine Advocate

The 1998 La Poja, the estate's flagship wine, was produced from 100% Corvina Veronese and aged 27 months in new French oak demi-muids. An opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by dazzling aromas of blackberries, lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, and pain grille. Superbly concentrated with great purity, and a palate staining intensity and richness ... all without any heaviness ... a real achievement. This is stunning stuff! Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Score: 93. —Robert Parker, December 2002.

Wine Enthusiast

Never mind the fanciful name: It’s basically Corvina from the Verona area made in an ultramodern, international style. The color is dark, the nose extracted and sweet, and the mouthfeel thick and creamy. There’s a pile of black fruit and chocolate on the palate and some cheek-grabbing tannins to the finish.

Score: 90. May 01, 2003.
