Franz Hirtzberger

A bit closed and backward early on but has 30+ years of aging potential and when mature will mop up the competition. Mouthwatering floral, tangerine and lime juice flavors. Wet stone/ mineral accents. Creamy palatte, bright acidity. Words really fail to impart the experience, its that good.

Wine Enthusiast

Tight, taut and mineral, tense and concentrated. There is intense acidity and a touch of spice, but this is all about structure and suppressed fruit. Keep this wine at least until 2010.

Score: 95. —Roger Voss, May 01, 2008.

Wine Advocate

The Hirtzbergers’ 2006 Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel proved rather stubbornly closed-in, but decanting revealed ripe apricot, narcissus floral notes, and fruit pit piquancy that led to a bitter-sweet, rich palate. This Riesling is impressively concentrated and compact, with wet stone and apricot kernel dominating a long if somewhat somber finish. It will be most interesting to follow, as it may well open up over the short run and should stand up to 8-10 years in the cellar.

Score: 93. —David Schildknecht, June 2008.

Wine Spectator

A pronounced smoke and anise nose gives this plenty of character. Rich and ripe, with apricot, baked apple and ripe peach flavors. The silky finish is filled with plenty of power. Drink now through 2014. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Score: 92. —Kim Marcus, May 15, 2008.
