Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Some experts feel that the greatest maker of Hermitage is the firm of Jean-Louis Chave. The Chave family has been growing grapes at Hermitage since 1481. They have a reputation for making good wine in poor years, and excellent wine in good ones. They use low yeilding vines (average age 60 years) and a late harvest to produce the ripest fruit, and there is virtually no intervention in the winemaking and bottling with no filtration.

Wine Spectator

Dense and packed, but amazingly bright at the same time, this offers dried papaya and pineapple fruit backed by a paraffin note, with fresh floral, white peach and heather honey notes. Then the long, superstony finish takes over, and sails on nearly endlessly. This has power, precision and refinement all together. Drink now through 2030.

Score: 98. —James Molesworth, July 31, 2008.

Wine Advocate

The 2005 Hermitage blanc is remarkable wine. It is a powerful vintage for Chave with super-intense honeysuckle, acacia flower, marzipan, hazelnut, buttered citrus oil, and licorice notes as well as a rich, opulent, thick style made from very small yields of 30-35 hectoliters per hectare. It is extraordinary and has enough minerality and acidity to suggest that the wine is actually going to age for 20 or more years. (94-96)

Score: 96. —Robert Parker, April 2007.
