Andrew's Vat

Shea Vineyard runs along a southern slope outside the town of Yamhill, Oregon. The vineyard is divided into two sections by a deep ravine: “Left Field” for the western side and “East Hill” for the eastern portion. The soils for both sections are all sedimentary in nature and are layered over fractured sandstone. The 2005 Andrew’s Vat Shea Vineyard was crafted from block 13 on the East Hill of Shea Vineyard. The wine was made traditionally with 35% whole clusters. It was fermented with native yeasts in a French oak open top tank and punched down between 1 to 3 times as day. Total cuvaison lasted close to 22 days. The combination of a superior Oregon vintage, old fashioned winemaking and a new world grand cru made for an interesting wine full of integrity, complexity and grace.

Wine Spectator

Silky, with cherry and raspberry fruit mingling with sandalwood and spice flavors as the finish slides under a veil of fine tannins, persisting well. Drink now through 2013.

Score: 90. —Harvey Steiman, May 15, 2008.
